NCASA

The legislative process for creating the state’s K-12 education budget began this week, as lawmakers held joint committee meetings outlining the budgetary process. Staff from the non-partisan Fiscal Research Division provided committee members with a budgetary overview during Tuesday’s joint Education Appropriations Committee meeting, and shared plans for joint appropriations meetings through the end of March. Representatives from the NC Community College System (NCCCS) and NC Independent Colleges & Universities (NCICU) shared their budget and policy requests with members during this week’s joint appropriations meetings, while the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) and University of North Carolina (UNC) system is expected to officially share their priorities with lawmakers in the days ahead. Staff also noted the Governor is expected to share his recommended budget proposal during a joint meeting held on March 10, while the Senate will officially begin its budget deliberations on March 30th.
