Legislative Committees Discuss School Capital Funding, State Employee Health & Retirement

Today was a busy day at the General Assembly, featuring key committee discussions on wide-ranging education issues. The following is a brief summary of the various topics considered today:

 

Rules and Operations of the Senate

  • Senate lawmakers discussed Senate Bill 5: “Building North Carolina’s Future”—a school capital funding bill proposing a pay-as-you-go plan which would generate $2 billion for K-12 schools over nine years.

 

Joint Health Care Committee

  • The House and Senate held a joint health care committee, featuring State Treasurer Dale Folwell and representatives from various hospitals and healthcare organizations. Lawmakers discussed the State Health Plan proposal to move to a reference-based model.

 

Joint Pensions and Retirement Committee

  • State Treasurer Folwell also addressed House and Senate lawmakers during a joint pensions and retirement committee meeting. The State Treasurer and his team discussed ongoing issues with the state retirement plan, and provided possible solutions, which may spark future debate.
