Katherine directs the daily operations of the organization to provide communications and professional development services to school leaders, as well as leading NCASA’s governmental relations efforts in the North Carolina General Assembly and with other policymaking boards and commissions that impact public schools and their personnel.

Before becoming NCASA’s Executive Director October 1, 2013, she had served as Assistant Executive Director and Chief Lobbyist since March 2003. Prior to that Katherine had served as a lobbyist for the North Carolina Association of Electric Cooperatives and for the State Employees Association of North Carolina. She previously worked in public relations and in the daily newspaper industry, where she spent 10 years as a reporter and editor, including employment with the News & Observer’s Chapel Hill Bureau and with The Daily Dispatch of Henderson.

Her tenure at NCASA has included three terms as Interim Executive Director from July-December 2003, from January-June 2006, and from July-September 2013.

Katherine is a 2004 graduate of the Education Policy Fellowship Program, which is affiliated with the National Institute for Educational Leadership and is conducted by the Public School Forum of North Carolina. She also holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, with a concentration in political science.

She lives in Apex with her husband while her son studies at Appalachian State University.
