Greene County's Superintendent Named NC's 2019 A. Craig Phillips Superintendent of the Year
Greensboro | Dr. Patrick C. Miller, Superintendent of Greene County Schools, was named the 2019 A. Craig Phillips North Carolina Superintendent of the Year at an awards presentation and reception held Tuesday, Nov. 13 at the Joseph S. Koury Convention Center in Greensboro. The award was given jointly by the North Carolina Association of School Administrators (NCASA), North Carolina School Superintendents' Association (NCSSA) and the North Carolina School Boards Association (NCSBA).Scholastic sponsored the event and provided $5,000 in recognition of Dr. Miller's achievements. Miller was nominated for the state honor after being named District III's 2019 North Carolina Regional Superintendent of the Year by the Central Carolina Regional Education Service Alliance.
Dr. Miller is currently in his eleventh year as Superintendent of Greene County Schools. A native of Greene County, Dr. Miller has spent his entire career in his home county school system, serving as a music teacher, principal and now as superintendent. In March of this year, the Greene County Chamber of Commerce named Dr. Miller as Greene County Citizen of the Year. Under Dr. Miller's leadership, Greene County Schools has seen a graduation rate increase to 94.5%, the fifth highest in the state. Additionally, 91% of teachers in Greene County met or exceeded growth expectations on state assessments in 2016-17.Dr. Miller initiated a comprehensive STEM Program PK-13 which has helped the district substantially raise academic achievement. Greene County Schools also was named one of 25 national models of Innovative Successful Practices by AASA/Successful Practices Network in September 2018. Both achievements conributed to Dr. Miller's selection as NC's new Superintendent of the Year."He works tirelessly to improve public education for students, staff and his community as a whole, and is well-respected among his peers for his outstanding leadership," said Jack Hoke, Executive Director of the North Carolina School Superintendents' Association. "He is most deserving of this honor."
Dr. Miller holds a Bachelor's degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and both a Master's and Doctor of Education degree from East Carolina University.
As the 2019 A. Craig Phillips North Carolina Superintendent of the Year, Dr. Miller will compete on the national level for Superintendent of the Year at the American Association of School Administrators' National Conference on Education, held February 14-16, 2019 in Los Angeles, CA.
The 2019 North Carolina Regional Superintendents of the Year, all of whom were nominees for this prestigious state award and were recognized as such at the Nov. 13 ceremony, included:
