  • Bill Allows Superintendent's Spouse To Work In Same School System

    House Bill 611 that makes it legal for a local school board to hire the spouse of the superintendent, if that decision is discussed and approved in an open meeting, this week cleared two Senate committees and the Senate floor before heading back to the House for a vote of concurrence on the measure and ultimately being sent to the Governor’s desk. The bill was brought forward by Sen. Ralph Hise (R-Mitchell), who said it is important, especially in the rural counties he represents, to empower local school boards to determine the appropriate role of a superintendent’s spouse if the board wants to employ that individual.

  • Gates County Schools Superintendent Receives 2021 NCSSA Dr. Dwayne Stallings Leadership (NERESA) Award

    The North Carolina School Superintendents' Association (NCSSA) has announced the selection of Dr. Barry Williams, Superintendent of Gates County Schools, as the recipient of the Dr. Dwayne Stalling Leadership Award. The award is presented in honor and recognition of a superintendent who has demonstrated a strong dedication to public education, commitment to academic excellence, and a continual focus on professional growth and student learning. This inaugural award is presented to a superintendent serving a school district in northeast North Carolina who is a member of the Northeast Regional Education Service Alliance (NERESA). NERESA is a professional alliance that supports and enhances educational services and resources for the member districts.

  • Meeting Current Standards for School Nurses Statewide May Cost Up to $79 Million Annually (May 2017)

    The need for school nurses is growing due to increased attendance by children with health issues as well as laws and policies expanding the health care responsibilities of schools. The General Assembly should direct SBE to formulate a new goal and strategic plan for school nurse staffing levels, and direct the Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Public Instruction to combine CFST and SNFI into a single program and implement acuity models at state and local levels.
